CityExplainer’s mission is to push for government transparency and accountability, and promote civic engagement in Baltimore City. We will work to do this in scrappy, cost-effective and distributed ways, using technologies that can reach as many people as possible who care about Baltimore.
CityExplainer offers a civic live streaming platform at CityExplainer.com, as well as a blogging platform at CityExplainer.com/blog. We will do original research and reporting, create original multimedia, and help foster conversations around government transparency and civic engagement on various social media platforms. We will use programs such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Docs/Spreadsheet, Youtube, Tableau and live streaming and mobile technologies to share content and foster online civic engagement.
We don’t care about page views. We care about connecting people, engaging people, empowering communities and, yes, making a difference.
We hope you become a founding member of our site for $7/month — just a couple lattes, right? — in order to help build a recurring revenue model that can support our work. A portion of our revenue will go toward filing, processing and litigating public information act requests at the state and federal levels. Recently, we crowdfunded more than $375 to pay to for the release of 7,000 emails from Baltimore City government that were connected to the civil unrest in April/May. People gave us anywhere from $10 to $100 (!)
Every day, we must fight for open, accountable government. Let’s do it together.
If you become a member, you will get, among other things, insider access to:
- Periodic “CityExplainer Insider” emails that give you the scoop on the work we’re doing.
- Raw and processed data and primary source documents that we obtain through the course of our work, from freedom of information act requests or other sources.
- Access to our private Facebook group for members only.
- Invitations to future events.
By joining, you will be among the first to have new and newsworthy information about Baltimore and Maryland, or larger issues that would matter to our residents — before we share it with a general audience. We would invite you to do your own work with it — build your own maps or infographics, or take the most interesting data points or documents and share them directly with your networks.
Thank you for your support!
